Thank You REI—New Gear Put to the Test

BRMC recently received a substantial grant from Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) to purchase trail maintenance gear and education materials.

For trail maintenance we acquired:
3 Spades
5 Shovels
1 Lumberjack protective face shield
Towing cable
4 Axes
4 Large Pruning Saws
3 27” Saws
4 Loppers
4 Pruning Shears
1 Stihl Chainsaw
...and other maintenance gear.

In addition to that gear, we also acquired education materials for classroom study, birding, and aquatic research.

REI joined us for our inaugural use of the new gear. Shortly before receiving the gear, a large tree fell across the Quarry Trail. The pruning saws and loppers were useful in removing all the excess branches, then the new chainsaw was used to remove sections of the tree so that the path could be cleared.

This gear has proved to be useful for establishing a trail parallel to the often muddy Mountain Road trail. Once you cross the train track, you’ll notice a new trailhead formed on the right side as you enter the preserve.

We thank REI for their continued support of BRMC.
